The Importance of Community

When a community comes together for someone it loves, magic is made, and Cookeville does this exceptionally well. Humans need community. This fact has been tested and proven hundreds of times over by a myriad of people and studies. We are social creatures, and solitude does not suit us. This becomes even more true when you’re part of a small business.
We are not the cheapest option on the market, and we know that. It’s part of being small business. We don’t have our own greenhouses to grow plants for the shop, and we don’t make our own pots. You could go on Amazon right now and find pots of all shapes, colors, and sizes for any plant in your home, so believe me when I tell you that we genuinely appreciate you choosing to come to us. Small businesses like Glass Tangerine cannot rely on being the cheapest or even at times the easiest option, but we can and do rely on building a fantastic community with other local businesses in our area to support each other.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of celebrating our fearless leader, Emma Crabtree, at her baby shower. It was such a sweet moment to witness so many other small business owners coming to give Emma a gift (many of them beautiful and handmade) and their love. Standing in the courtyard of The Exceptional Bean, surrounded by flowers and so many kind people, I could not help but recognize the beauty of this community. Everyone shows up, and helps out. Small businesses are in it together, and not just business, but life. That’s how we make it.
A Shower For The Blueberry
It’s such hard work. So much of yourself is poured out and directly into the business. Criticism feels so personal at times, because your business is a reflection of you; it’s your baby! But having a community that loves your shop, appreciates what you do, and continues to show up makes it all worth it. “Networking” is not something that can become outdated. I suppose this serves as a reminder to say “hello” to people while you’re out, start conversations, and ask new acquaintances questions. We can’t tell people that it takes a village, while refusing to be a villager.
So as you’re deciding where to spend your hard earned money this summer, we would love it if you considered coming to Glass Tangerine. If not your money, we’d also love and appreciate some of your time. Come walk through the store, take pictures, tag us. (We always repost.) Let us be part of your community…it’s the way we grow.
